Sovereignty means, “what a sovereign has” such as control over his/her kingdom.
God’s sovereignty presents an idea that God is in control of the whole of His kingdom – universe.
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honour come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength – 1Chronicles 29:11 – 12
Psychologically speaking, knowing that God is in control of the universe presents an idea that an all-good and all-powerful God is in charge of all that happens to us, which means peace and tranquillity coupled with absolute security.
Does this then mean that God is oblivious to the choices that we are going to make concerning life – He is waiting with bated breath to see how things are going to turn out?
“Men will allow God to be everywhere but on his throne. They will allow Him to be in his workshop to fashion worlds and make stars. They will allow Him to be in His almonry to dispense His alms and bestow his bounties. They will allow Him to sustain the earth and bear up the pillars thereof, or light the lamps of heaven, or rule the waves of the ever-moving ocean; but when God ascends His throne, His creatures then gnash their teeth. And we proclaim an enthroned God, and His right to do as He wills with His own, to dispose of His creatures as He thinks well, without consulting them in the matter; then it is that we are hissed and execrated, and then it is that men turn a deaf ear to us, for God on His throne is not the God they love. But it is God upon the throne that we love to preach. It is God upon His throne whom we trust.” ― Charles Haddon Spurgeon
